Each student is responsible for reading and understanding the Course Information and Syllabus, including the Course Policies below, and for knowing his or her responsibilities with respect to the course.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance may be taken more than once during a class and is reported to the Head of IT Department. Attendance for the duration of each class is expected and necessary for mastery of the material and to personally receive important information communicated verbally during class. Students are expected to take notes and should seriously consider the impact of missing any part of a class on his or her ability to earn a favorable grade. Students are responsible for what transpires during class whether present or not. A student who misses any part of a class is responsible for making arrangements with a classmate to catch up.
CLASS PREPARATION AND PARTICIPATION
Students are expected to prepare for and participate in each class. Class preparation includes, but is not limited to, being on time for class, understanding what is required for each class, understanding and completing reading and computer assignments on time, preparing assignments for submissions in advance of class, bringing required materials to class, checking e-mail on a regular basis, and being prepared to ask and answer questions about the topics being covered.
Class participation includes, but is not limited to, being present where class lectures are being held, paying attention in class, answering and/or asking relevant questions, using computer lab time for course work only, helping fellow classmates during free lab time, refraining from causing or responding to distractions (e.g. cell phones, side conversations) during lectures and lab demonstrations, and completing in-class assignments as requested by the lecturer.
The lecturer, at his/her sole discretion, determines each student's level of class preparation and participation through various means including but not limited to attendance records, quality of work, in-class assignments, quizzes, answers to questions, the number and types of questions asked, mental notes, etc.
ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments include course work done by the student for a grade. Each student is expected to complete his or her own assignments unless explicit instructions to work together have been given.
Assignments must be prepared in accordance with the Work Submission Requirements, which is considered part of this syllabus. The lecturer reserves the right to reduce a grade on an assignment that is prepared in an unacceptable or disorganized manner.
A hard-copy form of each assignment must be submitted in class on the due date. Hard copy includes printouts only. Hard copy may be submitted early by putting them on the lecturer’s table anytime before class begins on the due date and by notifying the lecturer by e-mail within 24 hours of doing so. Early assignments may not be submitted more than 7 days early. Output produced for an assignment must be properly labeled and identified. See the Work Submission Requirements for details.
Students must make and keep a backup copy of all hard copy and electronic files that is turned in.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment is considered late if it is not submitted in hard-copy form on or before the due date. Late assignments are subject to a 20% late penalty (as a disincentive) unless a legitimate excuse is provided and the lecturer is notified in advance of the start of class on the due date. The lecturer will determine at his/her sole discretion what is an acceptable excuse on a case-by-case basis. Late assignments will not be accepted after the last night of class except in documented cases of true emergency or serious health problems.
TESTS/QUIZZES
Tests and quizzes may consist of multiple choice, true-false and short answer questions; case studies, and short essays.
Make-up quizzes are not available, but make-up tests may be granted in extreme and unusual circumstances involving documented serious illness, health or other such emergency, provided the lecturer is notified in advance of the test. The lecturer will consider each situation individually and will determine, at his/her sole discretion, whether or not a make-up test is warranted. In the event a make-up test is granted, it is the student's responsibility to take the test before the start of the next scheduled class. Students are responsible for scheduling the appointment and for taking the make-up test before the start of the next scheduled class.
RETENTION OF COURSEWORK
All course work including, but not limited to, graded assignments, electronic media and files, test papers, homework, quizzes, projects, etc., must be retained by the student until an official grade is received and confirmed by the student. By not retaining possession of all graded and returned course work, the student waves his/her right to question and/or appeal the official grade in the event there is a disagreement.
CORRECTION OF GRADE CALCULATION ERRORS
Grade calculation errors will be corrected provided the lecturer is notified within one week of returning the graded work to the class. Grading errors due to eraser marks or sloppiness on computer-scanned forms will not corrected and points will not be credited back to students because it cannot be determined whether erasure marks are made during or after graded forms are returned.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Students are expected to maintain a high standard of scholastic integrity. All work in this course is to be done individually unless explicit instructions have been given to do otherwise. Each student is required to submit the product of his or her own work. Helping another student when they are stuck is an honorable thing to do, but only to a point. Assignments from different students that look similar are subject to high scrutiny.
Cheating on exams or assignments and quizzes, plagiarizing, interfering with another student's work, misrepresentation of the student's work, etc., are serious offenses and will be handled by the appropriate authorities in the department and the college. Penalties for violations range from a grade of zero on the assignment to a grade of F for the course.
RESPECTFUL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT RULES
A part of KPTMKCAS’s life is the respectful learning environment. Students will show courtesy towards both their peers and lecturers. Similarly, lecturers will show courtesy towards both their peers and students.
